Preparing for your first placement

Essential items

Process 5

Before your foster child arrives, setting up a warm, inviting space can help them feel safe and valued from the very beginning. You don’t need to go overboard — just focus on the essentials and build from there.

Here are some key items to have ready:

  • A separate bed with clean, fresh bedding
  • Dresser or storage for personal belongings
  • A shelf or area for toys, books, keepsakes or special items
  • A cosy chair or reading nook, ideally with a soft blanket or cushion
  • Age-appropriate books, toys or games to help them feel at ease
  • Basic toiletries, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush or comb, deodorant, and sanitary products
  • A night light or bedside lamp, offering comfort at bedtime

Add a Personal Touch

Decorate the room using calm, neutral colours to begin with. Once your foster child arrives and starts to feel settled, invite them to add their own personality to the space. Whether they’re into football, animals, superheroes or glitter — allowing them to make choices can help build a sense of ownership and belonging.
