Preparing for your first placement
We know how exciting it is to begin your fostering journey — and we’re just as eager to support you every step of the way.
From the moment your assessment begins, we take the time to really get to know you and your family. Together, we’ll build a detailed profile that highlights your strengths, interests, and home life. This thoughtful approach helps us make the best possible match between you and a child — one that feels right for everyone involved.
When a match is made, you’ll often have the opportunity to meet the child or young person before the placement begins. These introductions help build familiarity and trust, making the transition smoother for you both. You can also create a welcome booklet — a simple but meaningful gesture that includes photos of your home, family, pets, and a short message about what life is like with you. It’s a great way to help a child feel more comfortable and reassured ahead of their move.
You’ll be fully briefed on the child’s background and the circumstances that brought them into care. This understanding is key to helping you offer the stability, patience and support they need. And you won’t be doing any of this alone — our team is always here to offer guidance, resources, and encouragement.
To help you feel even more supported, we’ll connect you with one of our experienced foster carers. These peer buddies are a great source of reassurance and advice, especially as you take your first steps into fostering. They’ve been where you are and can share real-life insight that only fellow carers truly understand.
Together, we’ll help you feel confident, well-prepared, and supported as you open your heart and home to a child in need.
“I made a cosy, welcoming (gender-neutral) bedroom, filled the cupboards with yummy food, completed all of the training, and read book after book. That preparation was invaluable — because once I welcomed my first child, time certainly got a lot tighter!
